Bridget Arregger

Born in Chorley, Lancashire

Have lived in Plymouth, La Jolla, Cardiff, Stonebridge Park, High Wycombe, Ashton Keynes and on the high seas.

Now in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, UK

Colleagues have variously descried me as a facilitator, leaven in the mix, and arrogant, which seems fair. I might be undiagnosed autistic as I'm sometimes socially awkward, not much concerned with making money or appearing normal, am hypersensitive to light and sound and get obsessed and fixated on projects of my choice. I dislike social media, hate crowds, amplified music, and fireworks and can't stay out in bright sunlight for long. My sons and grandchildren seem to think I'm OK. I thrive on problem-solving and am interested in the physical and natural sciences, speculative fiction, mental health issues, neurodivergence and diversity of all kinds. I seek the bigger picture but struggle to grasp philosophy, theology, literature and modern languages at the level I would like. My favoured definition, from RG Collingwood, is that god is the unified nature of all the universe. The whole. My favourite book is The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker with the quote from John Fowles that the devil is 'Not seeing whole'. I shall take this book on my desert island together with a laptop and endless batteries. Or learn to make paper and ink.

Within my limited sphere of influence I strive to work to my own high standards, aiming to achieve a workable balance between good and good enough. I encourage others to broaden their horizons and set challenging but manageable targets. I remind myself from time to time that the Arabic word 'sin' can be translated as falling short of the target. My teaching career has encompassed Psychology, Physics, Maths and Communication Studies and out of that has come three textbooks in my former name of Adams.

Since my retirement I have concentrated on creative writing, painting and being a volunteer for Buckby Library & Hub (BL&H). I belong to several art groups in Long Buckby, and to Daventry U3A Creative Writing Group and, until recently, Towcester Writers. I'm proud to have been a founder member of Somewhere Else Writers in Cirencester. For several years, I was a member of various choirs, including Daventry Choral Society,  but have lost my voice. My favourite topics for writing are gender identity, dreams, fantasies and my sailing diaries. I have found my spiritual home in the (British Liberal) Quaker Society of Friends. I like the peace, equality, truth and simplicity at the heart of the Friends' guidance.

I have been married twice, am widowed and blessed with two wonderful sons and four excellent grandchildren and our extended families.
